Terrapins Insider

All the latest University of Maryland athletics news, notes and insight from Post reporter Alex Prewitt.
The scouting report of Oregon State contained just two players, and that duo quickly sucked the energy from the building. Many Terrapins insisted they didn’t even notice Obama. As it turned out, they appeared not to notice senior guard Roberto Nelson (31 points) or forward Devon Collier (29 points, 11 rebounds) either.
“We really didn’t defend well at all,” forward Evan Smotrycz said. “We just didn’t do our job. We didn’t show long enough on ball screens, get help-side, box out, everything. We didn’t do it well.”
Turgeon, in his third season in College Park, prides himself on coaching teams with stingy defense and fly-trap rebounding. But possession after possession, the Beavers (2-1) found easy buckets inside, shooting nearly 60 percent for the game while attempting just eight three-pointers. Maryland (1-2) actually won the rebounding battle, grabbing 23 on the offensive end alone, though Oregon State’s high-percentage offense ripped opportunities away from the Terps on the defensive glass.
“I just can’t get our guys to box out,” Turgeon said. “We’re doing some things in practice. I’m never done trying to figure it out.”
Three games into the season, days away from flying to the U.S. Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam tournament, the Terps have already grown into a frustrated group. They missed nine free throws and committed 15 turnovers, off which the Beavers scored 29 points. Despite five players reaching double figures, including a team-high 23 points from Dez Wells, 16 from Smotrycz and 15 from Jake Layman, the rest of the group contributed just nine.
Wells, who four days earlier was benched against Abilene Christian for a “miscommunication” with Turgeon, reassumed his role as Maryland’s spark plug, attacking the rim and making all eight free throw attempts. Afterward, though, Wells accepted the blame for the loss.
“It’s just my leadership,” he said. “I take full responsibility for not having my guys ready. I’m only as good as they are. I wasn’t too good tonight for getting them ready for each half. I take responsibility for that. It’s not on us; it’s on me. I’ll get better at that.”
Neither team led by more than six points during the first half, when the lead changed nine times and the game was tied on 13 occasions, including 38-38 at intermission. Freshman point guard Roddy Peters (Suitland) played well, knifing through Oregon State’s zone defense for 10 points and six assists, but the Beavers opened the second half with an 8-0 run, aided by sloppy Terps passing and slow defensive rotations. Soon the home team was behind by a dozen points.
Despite foul trouble hampering Smotrycz, Wells and forward Charles Mitchell (10 points, eight rebounds), Maryland came within three points late in the second half. Each time, though, Oregon State marched back down the court and turned to Collier or Nelson, who provided the game’s biggest bucket by making a step-back jumper with the shot clock winding down that clinched the game.
“Until we’re committed to being a good defensive team, we’re going to have results like this,” Turgeon said.

Oregon State 90, Maryland 83: Terps fall with President Obama watching at Comcast Center

Drew Angerer/Getty Images - Malia Obama and President Obama watch the action during Sunday night’s Oregon State win at Maryland.
Mark Turgeon rubbed his face with both hands, staring down at the box score. The Maryland men’s basketball team’s rebounding was abysmal in a 90-83 loss to Oregon State, the defense porous. Turgeon promised to revisit the defeat in the film room. “There were so many mistakes happening,” he said. “I can’t even keep up.”
The atmosphere felt nothing like a mid-November nonconference game, but that’s what happens when the commander in chief shows up. A crowd uncharacteristically large for this time of year against this caliber of opponent was enticed into Comcast Center by the prospect of seeing President Obama, and most rose to their feet and cheered when he and the first family strode to their seats behind the Beavers’ bench.

Tour du Rwanda to cost Rwf372 million

Aimable Bayingana.
This year’s Tour du Rwanda cycling race which starts tomorrow will cost an estimated Rwf372 million, the organisers, Rwanda Cycling Federation has confirmed.

The federation chairman, Aimable Bayingana, while addressing a press conference on Thursday, said the eight-day competition promises to be better than previous editions.

“We have a good budget to work with, and we hope with more money injected, even the standards will improve,” he said. “The good thing is that we have got sponsors, so we expect everything to be fine.”

A total of 15 teams will compete for the top prize. Rwanda will be represented by Team Akagera, Team Kalisimbi and Team Muhabura with each fielding five riders.

Some of the foreign teams  already in the country to take part in this year’s Tour du Rwanda include; As Be Co of Eritrea, Avia Crabbe (Belgium), Team Haute Savoie (France) and South Africa’s MTN Qhubeka, which features homeboy Adrien Niyonshuti.

Others are; UCI Continental Centre (South Africa), Ethiopia, Egypt, Kenya, Algeria, Gabon, while Tanzania are expected in to arrive today.

Team USA Novo Nordisk, which used to participate as Team Type 1, were the first to arrive for the continental race on Wednesday.  The tour will cover 876 kilometres divided in eight stages.

Uganda   vs  Rwanda     3pm

Amavubi players will have to be at the top of their game to beat Uganda Cranes in an international friendly match today at the Mandela national stadium in Kampala, Uganda,  Amavubi Stars coach Eric Nshimiyimana has cautioned.

“We shall need a collective effort from all the players because Uganda Cranes is a very good team with more experienced players who  have also played together for some time,” Nshimiyimana told Saturday Sport before the team’s departure. The team left for Kampala yesterday ahead of today’s clash. It is a return of the earlier friendly played in Kigali in February that ended in a 2-2 draw.

“It’s a friendly but believe me,  each  team will be out to try and win.  I think it is going to be an interesting match between two teams that love to outdo each other,” Nshimiyimana added.

The former Amavubi midfielder, who was part of the team that beat Uganda 1-0 (thanks to Jimmy Gatete’s sole strike) in the infamous 2004 Nations Cup qualifier, said he would have a good idea of his starting team after the last training session which was still going on by press time yesterday.  “We know, we are going to play with a good Ugandan side that has an excellent home record in Namboole, but we have to try to score goals and defend well too,” admitted the Amavubi coach.

Nshiyimana will be up against his former boss, Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic-the Uganda Cranes coach, who was sacked by the Rwandan FA in April this year following a poor run of results. Both teams are using the match as part of their preparations for the Cecafa Challenge Cup.

Nshimiyimana said the game will help the Amavubi players to build their fitness and mental strength ahead of the Cecafa tournament,” he noted.

“We are a team and we know that we have to work together if we want to achieve our objective to do well in the CECAFA and other competitions,” he explained.

AS Kigali coach defiant despite midweek defeat

Despite losing 2-1 to visitors Mukura in the ninth round of the Turbo King Football League season on Tuesday, surprise early pace-setters AS Kigali head coach says his side is still going strong and will bounce back soon.
Andrew Gasambungo told Times Sport after the match on Tuesday that his players are still enjoying themselves at the top of the table and the City of Kigali-sponsored team is under no pressure even as they are now just a point clear at the summit.
Tuesday’s result was AS Kigali’s second defeat in the last nine games, and the team now has 21 points, a point ahead of APR FC.
The City of Kigali side dominated the first half and scored first through striker Bodo Ndikumana on the 20th minute, but Mukura responded in an emphatic way with two goals in second half.
Nelson Minani scored the equaliser 12 minutes after the break, while Hussein Cyiza Mugabo put the game beyond AS Kigali’s reach with a beauty on 65 minutes.
Asked whether his team was starting to crack under pressure, with local giants APR, Kiyovu, Rayon Sports and Police all breathing down their necks, Gasambungo said, “I feel no pressure at all.”
He added, “Of course no one likes to lose, but for us this defeat does not come with any pressure. We are still at the top, and we have learned lessons from the last couple of games, including today’s.”
But Gasambungo acknowledged the challenge they have on their hands, especially with the league proving to get more competitive by the day.
“We’re just savouring every moment we spend at the top, we know we are not guaranteed of the top spot, we know the big boys are right behind us. We’re still a young team, the players will need time to get used to being at the top and stay there until the end, but that’s maybe for the future,” he conceded.
Michel Ndahinduka fired APR to within one point of leaders AS Kigali, scoring the lone goal in their fixture against Musanze on Tuesday.
SC Kiyovu jumped into third position with 18 points after beating Sam Ssimbwa’s Police FC 2-0, thanks to goals from Hussein Habimana and Ali Musa.
Defending champions Rayon Sports suffered their second defeat in four days, after falling 2-1 to bottom-half side Etincelles.
Yussuf Kayihura Chami and Arafat Bahame scored for the Rubavu-based outfit, while Meddie Kagere scored the consolation for the Blues, who consequently slipped to fifth place with 16 points – five points behind leaders AK Kigali.

Byukusenge confident ahead of Sunday’s Tour du Rwanda

photo

Team Rwandan captain Nathan Byukusenge is a confident man ahead of the team’s participation in the Tour du Rwanda 2013 edition due on Sunday.

Rwanda will field three teams, Akagera, Muhabura and Kalisimbi – each with five riders.

Byukusenge, who will particularly ride for Team Kalisimbi, said that all riders are eagerly awaiting the tour after having a great time during preparations.

“We are ready for the tour after several months of training. We made major improvements during our preparations and are looking forward to a successful tour,” he said. “This year’s edition will be special. We have three teams and all the riders are in good form and are confident to stage one of their best tour performances.”

He added: “We promise strong performance compared to our last outing when we finished tenth. It will be hard but we have to win and hope that all our teams will go on the road with that in mind,” added Byukusenge.

Rwanda’s top rider Adrien Niyonshuti will feature for his South African side Samsung MTN Qhubeka. Niyonshuti finished ninth in an 894.8km race during the 2012 edition which was won by Lill Daren from Team South Africa.

In a related development, Tanzania has named a five-man team to represent the country in this year’s edition of Tour du Rwanda.

The national team manager, Nicola Morganti, said on Tuesday that the riders were identified during the national cycling championships held two months ago in Dodoma.

He said the Tour de Rwanda event will be useful for Tanzanian riders as they prepare for the next continental championships to be held in Egypt later this year.

He also said that currently the five riders are undergoing intensive training at their respective clubs.

Some of the riders that Morganti will count on are professional rider Laizer Richard (based in South Africa), national champion Hamisi Hussein Mkoma, and Gerald Konda.

This is the second time Tanzania riders will be competing in Tour de Rwanda and Morganti said he is confident his team will perform well.

Apart from Rwanda and Tanzania, other teams expected for the  Tour du Rwanda 2013 include; UCI Continental Centre (South Africa), Ethiopia, Egypt, Kenya, Algeria, Gabon, DR Congo, Team As Be Co of Eritrea, Novo Nordisk (USA), Team Avia Crabbe (Belgium) and Rhone Alpes (France).

Competition to search for proposed music school students kicks off

photo
Knowless.
THE national competition to pick the best students to join the proposed school of music in Nyundo, Rubavu District, officially began last Saturday in Karongi District.

Riderman
Jacques Muligande, aka Mighty Popo, the school’s music director said that each district will be represented by 8 candidates in the national competition.

The Workforce Development Authority (WDA) sponsored search will be crowned with a selection of the best four candidates from each district at a grand finale slated for December 21 at Petit Stade.

At the end of the competition at least 36 students are expected to start training in different music categories by January next year.

Criteria for selecting the best students according to Muligande, will be based on one’s talent in singing, knowledge on some cultural/modern musical instruments,  passion and having completed the 9 year basic education among others.

WDA has engaged local music experts to be judges during the competition.

Ecole d’art de Nyundo, a renowned art school located in Rubavu District (Western Province), has been under renovation. This follows the government’s initiative through WDA to earmark Rwf500m for the promotion and professionalisation of the art industry in Rwanda.

WDA has also partnered with local artistes like Riderman and Knowles in an intensive campaign to market Technical and Vocation Education Training (TVET) in a bid to demonstrate that music is a good profession like any other professions.

WDA has also started collaborating with International music experts in curriculum development, purchasing modern training equipment, setting entrance requirements and management of the music training centre. One of them is Dr. Thomas Salter from Scotland. Salter has worked for 20 years as a professional musician and owns a musical band ‘the Peatbog Faeries’ one of Scotland’s best known names in contemporary folk music.

According to the Director General of WDA Jerome Gasana, the future plan is to expand the school with many options in music for potential singers, managers, producers and other careers for a formal music industry

Nyundo Art School currently has 220 students, training in wood sculpture, ceramics and graphic design.

Buoyant AS Kigali look to extend lead

LEADERS AS Kigali will be looking to stretch their lead at the top of the Turbo King Football League when they face Mukura on Tuesday at Stade de Kigali.

Unbeaten in the past six matches, Andre Gasambungo’s side go into today’s game as favourites against a visiting Mukura side that has lost five of its last eight matches.

The team has lost all three of its recent fixtures – against APR, Rayon Sports and Police.

Facing AS Kigali, a team that has lost just once of the last eight matches is a huge ask for coach Cedric Kaze and his struggling troops.

“The team has picked up the rhythm and I hope, against Mukura, we can maintain our good start,” Gasambungo told Times Sport ahead of today’s clash at Stade de Kigali in Nyamirambo.

But he warned his players: They (Mukura) might be struggling latyely but they are a good team with the ability to hurt anyone in the league…we must give them respect and not take anything for granted, we cannot afford to underestimate any team.”

However, Burundian tactician Kaze, who has seen his side struggle in the league this season, believes Mukura will bounce back after losing three matches a space of 14 days.

“In those three defeats, there was a lack of concentration in defence and inability to score goals, which has cost us dearly, but we have to dig ourselves out of this hole, it’s not too late,” said the former Prince Rwagasore FC coach.

Kaze’s side lost 2-1 at home to Police on Saturday, which followed 1-0 defeats to APR and Rayon Sports.

Elsewhere, defending champions Rayon Sports travel to Rubavu for a date with Etincelles at Umuganda Stadium.

Both sides go into today’s game on the back of defeats in their last fixtures. Rayon lost 1-0 to archrivals APR on Saturday, while Etincelles succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to Gicumbi FC, who finally landed their first win of the season.

Rayon’s Didier Gomes da Rosa will miss services of key midfielder-cum-striker Cedric Amissi, while Etincelles will be without defender Isiaka Nahimana. Both are suspended after each accumulated two yellow cards.

The match of the round will be at Mumena Grounds in Nyamirambo where home side SC Kiyovu host Sam Ssimbwa’s Police.

Gilbert Kanyankole’s Green Baggies have been in great form lately and are fifth in the table with 15 points, a point better than today’s opponents.

Fresh from a nervy 1-0 win over champions Rayon, second-placed APR travel to third-placed Musanze.

The record holders will be without their skipper Ismail Nshutiyamagara, who is suspended.

Remplaçants : Szarzewski, Debaty, Slimani, Vahaamahina, Claassen, Doussain, Lopez, Fickou.

APR gunning to shoot down Rayon Sports

photo
NO LOVE LOST: Matches between Rayon Sports and APR have always produced not only high entertainment but also drama as seen above. Times Sport/T. Kisambira
THIRTEEN-times league champions APR is looking forward to a much better performance when they face arch rivals Rayon Sports in the eighth round of the Turbo King Football league match due on Saturday at Amahoro stadium.
Speaking to Times Sport yesterday, APR assistant coach Vincent Mashami said the army side is working hard to garner maximum points against the reigning champions, and go above them in the league standings.
“It is going to be a tough game, keeping in mind that we lost the last encounter badly (4-0) against them last season. However, this is a new season and we can’t continue to think about what happened in the previous season but work hard to ensure that we put things right,” said Mashami.
He added, “Our preparations are going on well and players are in a good mood. We need to avoid mistakes and work as a unit to ensure that we accomplish our mission which is bagging maximum points.”
Mashami, who took over as the club’s assistant coach last month expressed satisfaction on his side’s return of 14 points after seven rounds of matches.
Rayon Sports and APR have created a bitter rivalry since 1995 with the later going on to win a record 13 league titles compared to seven for the former during that period.
After years of dominance, the Blues handed the Black and White side one of their heaviest defeats in recent years as they succumbed to a 4-0 loss in March this year.
Papy Kamanzi grabbed a brace, while skipper Aphrodis Hategikimana and Amissi Cedric netted the other two goals in a game that attracted 25,000 spectators . Nshimiyimana resigned following the loss and was replaced with Romanian-Germany born Andreas Spier.
In 2002, Rayon beat APR 4-1 at Amahoro, but they have since struggled to beat their rivals in the last six years or so.
APR currently sit third on the league standings with 14 points, two points behind arch rivals Rayon Sports and four behind leaders AS Kigali.
Whereas the champions go into Saturday’s game fresh from a 1-0 win over Mukura, their opponents (APR) were frustrated in a goalless draw against Etincelles.

Espoir, KBC face off in hoops playoff finals

photo
Espoir will be led by last season's MVP Aristide Mugabe (#3) and Pascal Karekezi (C). Times Sport / File.
Defending champions Espoir faceoff archrivals and former champions, KBC today in Game One of the best of five basketball playoff finals at Amahoro indoor stadium, starting at 5pm.

Nyamirambo based Espoir, who are still unbeaten for almost two seasons, are aiming at extending their unbeaten record by retaining the title that they won last season after beating APR in three games.

“We have had enough time to prepare for these finals, we are not yet where we want to be until we retain this title. Going two seasons unbeaten would be a special achievement by this team,” Espoir coach Jean Bahufite told Times Sport yesterday.

The 2011 champions KBC are too looking to reclaim the title after finishing second in regular league behind Espoir.

“It’s our time to win it (playoff title) although it won’t be easy against the favourites, who are also still unbeaten in almost two seasons. But the boys are ready physically and mentally,” KBC head coach Cyrille Kalima said.

Game two will be played on Friday, the same day Game One of the women’s playoff finals between defending champions and favourites APR and Rwanda Allied Peace for Progress (RAPP), will start at 5pm.

Ten-man Rayon sink Mukura to go second

photo
Rayon’s Djamal Mwiseneza (right) scored the lone goal at Amahoro stadium last evening. Times Sport / T. Kisambira
A first minute strike from Djamal Mwiseneza helped ten-man Rayon Sports to a well deserved 1-0 win over Mukura in a Turbo King Football League encounter at the Amahoro stadium on Sunday.

In Rubavu, APR were held 0-0 by hosts Etincelles.  Mwiseneza, a Rwanda international midfielder, put Didier Gomes da Rosa’s defending champions in front with a speculative long range effort which flew past Mukura goalie Regis Shyaka. The goal is the quickest of the season so far.

Missing key strikers Kambale Salita, Samson Jakesh and suspended skipper Fuadi Ndayisenga, the Frenchman kept faith in the same squad that beat Espoir 2-1 last Wednesday.

His opposite number, Cedric Kaze, also made no changes to the team that lost 1-0 to APR with hope for a better show.

Rayon Sports, though they were also looking dangerous especially down the wings, Meddie Kagere probably should’ve done better from close range in the 9th minute.

Amiss Cedric was unable to direct his attempt past Shyaka as they pressed harder for a second goal.

Kagere forced a good save from Mukura’s keeper, when he pounced on an Amissi set piece ten minutes later.

Again, the striker found himself in a pocket of space before firing, but the loose ball hit the post.

Claude Nahimana should’ve given Mukura the equaliser in the 30th minute. Hussein Kiiza picked out an unmarked Nahimana inside the area, but the striker could only manage to direct his subsequent shot over the crossbar from close range.

Rayon Sports were good value for their lead at the break with Mukura probably a bit unfortunate not to have been able to level matters.

Mukura came back recharged after the interval and nearly found the back of the net two minutes into the second period.

Nahimana’s ball found an unmarked Kiiza at the far post, the striker tried to step past Jean Luc Ndayishimiye, but the shot stopper denied him with a trailing leg.

Sulaiman Mudeyi, who replaced injured Ildebrand Nshuti injected new life into Mukura but luck was simply not on their side.

The blues would then be reduced to ten men when Robert Ndatimana received a second yellow card for intentional handball off Kiiza’s challenge, forcing referee Gervais Munyanziza.

Mukura pressed harder for an equaliser and Yossa Bertrand had an opportunity to score on 80th minute but he was denied by impressive Ndayishimiye.

The win for Rayon Sports moves them up to second place on the table standings with 18 points, while Mukura remain ninth with nine points after seven games each.

Earlier, on Saturday, AS Kigali maintained their grip at the top of the table with 18 points after demolishing Police FC 3-0, while Amagaju remain rooted bottom of the table with two points.

It was a battle of for power and experience as Fred Muhumuza put up a spirited fight to overcome Kenya’s Patrick Amote unanimously in the Africa elimination fight on Friday.

The Ugandan scored most in the toe-to-toe contest but Amote proved a hard nut to crack in the Mogas National Championship at Club Obligatto.

Muhumuza took command of the 10-round contest from the start. But Amote tried to overturn the momentum by pinning his opponent on the canvass.

Muhumuza kept his opponent at bay with a stinging jab. And Coach Sero Addes who had earlier tipped an easy victory for Muhumuza was happy with the result all the same.

“I am satisfied with the result. The man was awkward. He was just kept on absorbing punches,” he said.

The victory puts Muhumuza on the line for the Africa title after stretching his unbeaten record to seven fights.

“It was a good fight. I thank my fans for the support. Next time, I will make it better” remarked Muhumuza after the fight. The former national boxer Sula Segawa proved his prowess after handing a seventh round knockout against DR Congo’s Herve Zongo.
